Microsoft acquires FSLogix

Ø  FSLogix specializes in solving common challenges seen in virtual desktop environments when deploying Office 365 and non-persistent desktops
Ø  FSL was in initial days focused on tech called Cloaking for application management in Windows world (turn on and off individual applications)
Ø  One use case of Cloaking is that you can build a single base Windows image that actually has all your apps in it & you can use that single base image for all your users. Depending on the rights of the user when they log in, the cloaking software will automatically hide and un-hide the right combination of apps the user needs, it works for both physical and VDI
Ø  To enable cloaking FSL has File System Filter Driver, which is managed by a set of rules that you configure via the FSLogix Apps RuleEditor
Ø  To address the problem of Large windows base Image FSL created App Containers, which is similar to what AppVolumes is doing
Ø  App Container is used in something that FSL call Profile Containers. By creating a VHD for each user’s profile with FSL’s Profile Migration Utility, one can connect to Outlook OST files solving the issue of OST caching and the behavior of Outlook in online mode when used with Office 365
Ø  The way FSL interacts with the VHD you only have to open up one SMB connection to the VHD, rather than mounting it as a sort of network drive.
o   Solving Outlook search so you can search for any of your emails easily.
o   Roam OneDrive for Business user data between PCs to negate the need to resync that data each time you log on to a different PC.
o   Skype for Business Global Address List (GAL) roaming.
Ø  A key feature of FSL Office Containers is their ability to enable Cached Exchange Mode for Outlook in RDSH and non-persistent VDI env
Ø  Windows Virtual Desktop , Announced sep ~ 2018 in Ignite
o   It’s delivered via Azure (speed, scale, security, and compliance).
o   It’s the only cloud-based service that delivers a multi-user Windows 10 experience
o   It can be used for Office 365 Pro Plus

For many years, Citrix and more recently VMware have owned the desktop virtualization market, MS had limited investment into the market, leaving both Citrix and VMware be the leader but now MS looks to be working actively in the space. 1st Windows Virtual Desktop then Multiuser windows 10 and now FSL. Giving credence to the notion that endpoint OS belongs to DC

ICYMI : Microsoft 365 for Firstline Workers & other Ignite Updates

o   On Monday MS introduced a software bundle for so-called front-line workers like cashiers, truck drivers and factory employees, HCM software has been on Microsoft's public roadmap
o   Microsoft 365 F1, the new offering includes StaffHub, a recently launched app for managing shifts so that employees don't need to call in or stop by the main office to check a weekly schedule printed on a piece of paper – Deskless workers
o   F1 comes with the Office 365, Windows 10 and MS Enterprise Mobility and Security suite
o   StaffHub is a cloud-based platform designed for employees whose job requires them to be on their feet or on the go. Examples include retail staff, baristas, factory floor workers, site workers, and so on. It helps you create and manage work shifts, share files, and communicate important information with team members
o   StaffHub teams split into managers and users. Managers have read-write access to create and publish schedules for their teams through a browser app. Users can only read schedules and cannot update them without manager intervention. Once managers make changes to schedules like adding new shifts or accepting requests for time off, workers receive relevant updates that affect their schedule. The online schedule for a team is always up-to-date, a major advantage over traditional paper-based schedules

o   MS Teams is becoming the default communications client in Office 365. Microsoft announced that the team collaboration app will replace the current Skype for Business client in Office 365 “over time,” though the company did not provide an exact timeframe
o   Bing for Business for Microsoft 365 and internal company search use. The native search tool uses machine learning (ML) and the Microsoft Graph to deliver personalized search results on company data, documents, people sites, locations, and public web search results
o   Windows 10 device can now be joined to on-premises Active Directory (AD) and Azure AD at the same time. Co-management takes advantage of this improvement and enables the device to be managed by both ConfigMgr agent and Intune MDM. This allows organizations to move parts or workloads of their management to the cloud. For eg, customers can transition device compliance check, resource access profile deployment, or update management from ConfigMgr to Intune while continuing to use ConfigMgr for other workloads such as software distribution and deep device security configuration.

Automation Architect

·       There is no one tool that will automate your entire data center and there is no tool that will devise automation strategy or deal with the policy and organizational implications of an automation project
·       IT organizations at the largest enterprises have already begun to appoint automation architects
·       Automation projects will encounter both technical and non-technical challenges. You need an architect empowered to address both
·       As you devise your automation strategy, an automation architect will help your enterprise address a number of key technical decisions:
o   Which tools will be used, and for what purposes?
o   What is the best way to implement the tools?
o   Who will be in charge of maintaining each?
·       They will also consider the following business process realities:
o   How will corporate policies be decided and enforced?
o   To what extent should technical requirements drive business decisions, and vice versa?

o   How can the IT organization best collaborate with the business it serves?

Windows 10 S - All you want to Know

o   Windows 10 Cloud is here in the form of Windows 10 S targeted @ Education Market as an Option to Chromebook

o   Traditional apps will work on Windows 10 S only if it’s packaged as a Windows Store app, try to run an app not from store & you see below message

o   Microsoft is bringing the full desktop Office apps to the Windows Store to support the Windows 10 S release,
o   Apps are run in secure containers that can’t access other parts of the operating system
o   You won’t be able to buy Windows 10 S by itself, only on devices that come with it preloaded
o   Windows S a pared down version of Windows Pro cannot:
x   Run Non Store Apps
x   Join Domain
x   Run any other Browser except Edge
x   Have any other search integrated except Bing

Windows S Vis a vie Chromebook competitor is a thin client, a low or mid-range laptop, and has MDM (read Intune) & modern management aspects. Like WinRT it does not run regular Windows apps. Differentiator with RT is Windows S will support real Office apps, it runs on x86
Assuming there are enough apps that level the playing field with Chromebooks, it could make a dent in that space. There could not be a huge enterprise play but as time goes by and UEM picks up steam, perhaps it can catch on there, another use case could be using Win10 S device as a thinclient.
It’s a cheap Platform / Device combo as a segment companies are looking to address: Google with Chrome has been very successful in the space, HP and now Samsung pushing phones that turn into desktops, Apple campaigning to position the iPad as a laptop replacement and now MS with windows S. It will be a divided market.

App Streaming - Deep Linking in mobile apps

o   Google, which has a strategic interest in making mobile more like the web, is working on something called App Streaming It allows user to get native app experience without having to download the app
o   You had your AOL, your CompuServe, your Prodigy, your MSN — all online services that were disconnected from each other, some with unique content that could only be accessed if you installed (and subscribed to) that particular online service – The Web browser ended this
o   Disconnected World Of Apps - If you want New York Times news within an app environment, you need to download its app. If you want to interact with Facebook easily on mobile, you need the Facebook app. If you want to purchase from Amazon, another app was required (and even then, with iOS, you couldn’t buy because Amazon doesn’t want to pay the “Apple Tax” cut that Apple wants from any iOS app that sells things)
o   Goal is to move between apps just as you do with the web? Here Comes Google App Indexing, Apple Deep Linking & Universal Links, Facebook App Links and Bing App Linking
o   With app streaming, Google will broadcast what you’re looking for within an app, no download /install required, it’s a pilot test that Google’s doing with nine publishers in the US including Hotels Tonight
o   For now only happens for those using the Google App, on Android 5 and Android 6 devices — and only if you’re searching with US English as your setting. Moreover, you need to be on a good WiFi connection for the streaming to happen apps are rendered exactly as if you were using an actual downloaded version
o   Google App Indexing means that Google is now fed information from Hotel Tonight about what’s inside the app, all of its app pages - finding truly app-only content

o   Apple Universal Links can also render app-only content. But those links depend on someone having actually installed an app. With Google’s system, there’s no app installation required

MPS (discarded by Gartner) we have Managed Content Services now

The role of MPS, is changing  gradually from simply helping customers optimize their printers and MFPs, to helping them handle documents more efficiently and eliminate printing where practical. The industry-specific needs assessments are a starting point and one more step in the transition from MPS to the service we call "managed content services

»   Managed content services (MCS) is a solution that rationalizes, streamlines and optimizes business communications by providing consultative help, software and implementation
»   As the successor to MPS, MCS will subsume the print-related functions of MPS & also help customers manage the same content & documents in digital form
»   MPS and MCS are mostly adopted by organizations with more than 500 users, across all industries and in all regions
»   MPS usually covers scanning & document capture and may also be expanded to include staffed services, such as copy centre’s, as well as telecommuters
»   Some MPS is designed to improve document security or to reduce print volumes and power consumption for environmental reasons
»   MCS pricing and billing:-
o   Flat-fee services, which may be scaled according to the size of the engagement
o   Software licenses and maintenance fees per user or per MFP
o   Per-transaction fees for cloud services or SaaS
o   Hourly, daily or one-time fees for consultation and implementation
»   Traditional MPS together with the four services in which MCS focuses on:
o   The IT side of printing — printer server and printer driver maintenance and consolidation; printing security services; business system integration; and mobile, thin-client, and virtual desktop printing administration services
o   Business process automation
o   Business process optimization

Choose your MPS and MCS provider on its ability to help you optimize your printer fleet and to keep it optimal. Beyond the obvious equipment, supplies and technical support, this includes the needs assessment, ongoing tracking and consultative help, as well as software-based components, such as pull printing and mobile printing services.

Take into consideration any value-adds that make sense for you today, such as workflow packages for business processes and forms or for scanning and searching paper documents. At today's level of maturity, all MPS and MCS providers should be able to provide all these things, but how they go about it, at what cost and with what kind of foresight (around such risks as diminishing page volumes) will influence your selection.

VMware Trust Point - Securing the Workplace

Ø  Trust point = Unified endpoint management platform and Windows 10 migration tool = Tanium + Mirage + Dashboard (in future Airwatch) = 74 $ / device
Ø  Tanium's proprietary peer-to-peer technology lets organizations continually scan all endpoints in their global networks, finding and fixing security vulnerabilities and identifying and controlling unmanaged devices

Ø  Mirage logically splits the PC into individual layers that can be independently managed: a Base Image; a layer including user-installed applications, a layer including user data, files and personalization. In this manner, IT can create a single read-only Base Image. Image can be patched, updated, and re-synchronized as needed, without overwriting the user-installed applications or data. Read helps in migration to Windows 10
The New ways required to address the security Challenge in the ever evolving Workplace, this offering does address some of the Gaps which are there in Client Management Tools available out there.

Quest for Low Cost Thin Client - Raspberry Pi platform New Kid on the Block

o   The VDI World always looking for a breakthrough in hardware price/performance announced support for Citrix HDX Raspberry Pi thin clients sub $89 with 8 Million already shipped
o   Limitations : Single monitor right now. Limited protocol options. So you’ll never get a better experience than a Windows thin client, could replace some SoCs or other lightweight embedded systems
o   HDX SoC Receiver SDK enables off-loading to the Raspberry Pi GPU and achieves hardware acceleration with the SoC Quadcore ARM Processor
o   Full device management for firmware updates, remote configuration and DHCP tagging for plug and play deployment
o   Citrix HDX Ready Pi can be distributed via the mail, IT vending machines or stored in office supply cabinets. Employees can simply plug into an available display and be up and running in minutes.
o   Management software can be configured to recognize any HDX Ready Pi in the network to take control and automatically point to the correct Citrix StoreFront server for instant virtual app and desktop access
o   Eliminates desk-side support. The low cost makes it a rip-and-replace device that has no mechanical hard drive to fail
o   Eliminate financial asset tracking. The low device cost can be considered a non-capitalized office expense
o   RPi thin client. It is an RPi3, running TLXOS from ThinLinx. That’s based on Raspbian. It has Receiver 13.3 for Linux (Raspbian is a debian-based flavor of Linux). Scale has been tested to the hundreds, but more data is needed to see if it can go to larger environments.
o   TLX OS also runs on x86 devices, so you can use it to repurpose PCs or old thin clients so that you can manage everything from a single location
o   RPi thin clients are Viewsonic products available from MicroCenter and Ingram. You can get a Pi + case + power for around $50.

Cloudification of Application and effect on Platforms

The Modern economy is moving towards cloud at a rapid pace. With the likes of AWS, MS & Google along with plethora of small players in the Space the Technology is evolving much faster. Now you have the Truck and the load is being filled too , that my friends are the application. Making application available over Internet had been tried before in early 2000 (remember Application Service Providers (ASP) ) but never took off , the market has been made ready for this adoption by AWS and its popular IaaS service. Now that everybody is getting comfortable with cloudifying, the Application space has started to boom. Today on an average 11- 15 cloud apps are being used by a typical enterprise which is going to increase in years to come, easy adapters would be COTS Apps.
Apps previously were written to be run on a Desktop but with this new Shift towards clods apps are Written keeping in mind the Cloud access as well as access over Mobile devices, if an app is SaaS in nature its easy to run it across multiple form factors which is a reality in Workplace of today. What it will result into is loss of relevance for Platforms like Windows Apps of previous Generations were written for these but now apps are increasingly being written keeping Cloud in mind reducing te platform dependence.
Will Windows be able to survive this and maintain its Prime time slot?

With receding popularity of Windows the tools and ecosystem around it will also shrink in importance.

People Analytics

One of the overlooked element of a Workplace is its People (Users as we refer to them) , we put our energies on improving the tools to make users more productive and bring efficiency . But with the advent of Wearables will the focus be on real arbiter at the Workplace “THE USER”.  Will industry Use wearable sensors and digital data to deliver people analytics?
What it is and does?
Ø  Turbo-charged company ID badge (microphones, Bluetooth, infrared) to track all sorts of data points about employees to find what its most effective employees do differently
Ø  You collect the data , do some magic and provide analysis, which an organization uses to bring in change
Interesting case study at Bank of America Call Center - http://bit.ly/1LhY251
Ø  So what did they found at BoA? “People who spend all their time talking to 5 other people at the company completed calls in half the time as people in the least cohesive groups. It was a straight-line relationship, very powerful– Enable groups , Give people breaks together. Find social levers
Ø  Result 23 % improved productivity, time taken to finish the call. Turnover went down by 28%
Go on read the report and you will find another interesting relation between size of lunch table and job satisfaction J .

Windows 10 Continuum a Case for getting rid of that Laptop

Continuum experience that switches the phone into PC mode.

-  Use the phone as a track-pad to control the cursor on the connected screen
-  Gesture to move an app from the phone screen to the big screen and back (reminds of Minority Report :) )
- Universal Apps will provide better exp.  as those are screen aware
- Continuum for Phones uses Miracast for wireless connectivity
- Would have a Docking station dock that lets you plug in a monitor and use wire / Bluetooth for USB keyboard and mouse

Most of the users who today carries a Smart Phone and a Laptop. This once ready for Prime time will throw in interesting use cases, which will allow people to get rid of that laptop they tug along .
Computing / Memory power of Phones are increasing by day with Continuum available at least some of the enterprise users who depend on apps for there work will not need a second device. Along with that a VDI made available via phone and projected on a big screen will take away the challenge of using desktop on a Small screen .

Windows 10 - N And KN Versions

Around since Windows XP. If you know your system has either Windows N or KN installed, it is important that you download the relevant version of Windows 10. Upgrade paths must follow the previous version, e.g. Windows 7 Pro N upgrades to Windows 10 Pro N

The N version of Windows comes without a media player baked into the system. This version stems from a European Commission order back in 2004, which fined Microsoft €497 million for anti-competitive practices.

The KN version stems from an antitrust ruling in South Korea. This version removes Windows' media playing capabilities. At the time, it also removed the now-defunct Windows Messenger. The December 2005 ruling by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) also fined Microsoft $34 million.

Microsoft released the Media feature pack for Windows 10 N and Windows 10 KN editions recently. It can be used to add the missing components and applications to Windows 10 to restore the functionality when installed, it will turn the N or KN version into a regular version of Windows 10.

VDI Benefits

With Self Servicing of Desktops as in the case of Servers VDI has potential to reduce IT effort.
