was in initial days focused on tech called Cloaking for application management
in Windows world (turn on and off individual applications)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;">Ø<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">One
use case of Cloaking is that you can build a single base Windows image that
actually has <b>all</b> your apps in it
& you can use that single base image for all your users. Depending on the
rights of the user when they log in, the cloaking software will automatically
hide and un-hide the right combination of apps the user needs, it works for
both physical and VDI <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">

enable cloaking FSL has File System Filter Driver, which is managed by a set of
rules that you configure via the FSLogix Apps RuleEditor<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;">Ø<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">To
address the problem of Large windows base Image FSL created App Containers,
which is similar to what AppVolumes is doing<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;">Ø<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">App

VHD for each user’s profile with FSL’s Profile Migration Utility, one can
connect to Outlook OST files solving the issue of OST caching and the behavior
of Outlook in online mode when used with Office 365<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">

The Modern economy is moving
towards cloud at a rapid pace. With the likes of AWS, MS & Google along
with plethora of small players in the Space the Technology is evolving much
faster. Now you have the Truck and the load is being filled too , that my friends
are the application. Making application available over Internet had been tried
before in early 2000 (remember Application Service Providers (ASP) ) but never
took off , the market has been made ready for this adoption by AWS and its
popular IaaS service. Now that everybody is getting comfortable with
cloudifying, the Application space has started to boom. Today on an average 11-
15 cloud apps are being used by a typical enterprise which is going to increase
in years to come, easy adapters would be COTS Apps. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Apps previously were written to be
run on a Desktop but with this new Shift towards clods apps are Written keeping
in mind the Cloud access as well as access over Mobile devices, if an app is
SaaS in nature its easy to run it across multiple form factors which is a
reality in Workplace of today. What it will result into is loss of relevance
for Platforms like Windows Apps of previous Generations were written for these
but now apps are increasingly being written keeping Cloud in mind reducing te platform
dependence. <o:p></o:p></div>

Will Windows be able to survive
this and maintain its Prime time slot?<o:p></o:p></div>

With receding popularity of Windows
the tools and ecosystem around it will also shrink in importance.<o:p></o:p></div>

Continuum experience that switches the phone into PC mode.<br />

- Use the phone as a track-pad to control the cursor on the connected screen<br />
- Gesture to move an app from the phone screen to the big screen and back (reminds of Minority Report :) )<br />
- Universal Apps will provide better exp. as those are screen aware<br />
- Continuum for Phones uses Miracast for wireless connectivity<br />
- Would have a Docking station dock that lets you plug in a monitor and use wire / Bluetooth for USB keyboard and mouse<br />
<br />
Most of the users who today carries a Smart Phone and a Laptop. This once ready for Prime time will throw in interesting use cases, which will allow people to get rid of that laptop they tug along .<br />
Computing / Memory power of Phones are increasing by day with Continuum available at least some of the enterprise users who depend on apps for there work will not need a second device. Along with that a VDI made available via phone and projected on a big screen will take away the challenge of using desktop on a Small screen . </div>

Around since Windows XP. If you know your system has either Windows N or KN installed, it is important that you download the relevant version of Windows 10. Upgrade paths must follow the previous version, e.g. Windows 7 Pro N upgrades to Windows 10 Pro N<br />
<br />
The N version of Windows comes without a media player baked into the system. This version stems from a European Commission order back in 2004, which fined Microsoft €497 million for anti-competitive practices.<br />
<br />
The KN version stems from an antitrust ruling in South Korea. This version removes Windows' media playing capabilities. At the time, it also removed the now-defunct Windows Messenger. The December 2005 ruling by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) also fined Microsoft $34 million.<br />
<br />
Microsoft released the Media feature pack for Windows 10 N and Windows 10 KN editions recently. It can be used to add the missing components and applications to Windows 10 to restore the functionality when installed, it will turn the N or KN version into a regular version of Windows 10.<br />

Nice depiction from Login VSI on how the Workplace is Changing.<br />
<br />
Interesting is the application landscape which as heavily tilted in favor of Windows. Today applications are created from Ground up as SaaS apps which reduces the reliance on Windows as a OS and frees access constraints. This Gradual change will lead to reduced dominance of a platform and device.<br />
AI and Virtual assistant is another interesting one which most likely transform into a Helpdesk agent and more for an end user</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 72.0pt;">
With Fault Tolerance you can
protect a virtual machine by running a second 100% identical virtual machine on
another host. One of the short comings of Fault Tolerance was that it only
supports VMs with 1 vCPU. Fault Tolerance in vSphere 6 now finally supports
multi-CPU VMs, with up to 4 vCPUs per virtual machine. 10 Gbit network is very
much recommended when you plan to use FT on virtual machines with more than 1
vCPU.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 72.0pt;">

enabled backups, including the required snapshot technology. Note that normal
snapshots on FT enabled VMs are <u>not</u> supported.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 72.0pt;">
Fault Tolerance protected VMs now
always use Fault Tolerance protected storage, secondary storage is required
here. It’s now possible to “hot-configure” (enable) FT on a virtual machine.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 72.0pt;">
Virtual Machine Component
Protection (VMCP) is a new feature in vSphere 6 and an automated response for
All Paths Down (APD) or a Permanent Device Loss (PDL) situation. VMCP protects
VMs against storage connectivity failures and misconfigurations.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 72.0pt;">
If a APD or PDL condition occurs,
VMs are automatically restarted on a healthy host. This is something which is
beneficial for stretched cluster architectures, but is of course useful for any
environment using some kind of SAN storage. VMCP is currently only available
for storage architectures and not yet supporting network problems.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Authentication is the process of proving your identity, or,
more simply put, proving you are who you say you are. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are three ways for a user to prove they are who they
say they when it comes to authentication: <o:p></o:p></div>
<ol start="1" style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="1">
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Something
you know</b> -- Usually this will be a password or possibly a PIN<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Something
you have</b> -- A physical token, mobile phone, key-fob, smart-card,
etc.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Something
about you</b> -- A unique identifier such as a fingerprint or retinal
scan <o:p></o:p></li>
</ol>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Some Jargon Surrounding MFA<o:p></o:p></div>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>2-factor</b> –
The use of any two factors available from the multifactor list is
specifically called 2 Factor Authentication <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Strong
Authentication</b> – Simply another way of describing 2-factor and
multi-factor authentication.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Token</b> –
A token is something that you have such as an ATM card, a key fob, a
smartcard, a cell phone, piece of software, etc.<o:p></o:p></li>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="circle">
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Synchronous</b> tokens
have a clock or event trigger, which, the authenticating system keeps in
sync with by having the same clock or event counter. A user has the
ability to generate a code by looking at their token at the time of
authentication or by pressing a button on the token to generate a code to
use. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Asynchronous
tokens</b>, or, <b>Challenge/Response tokens</b> do not require
an internal clock or event counter. Instead the authenticating system
issues a challenge, often a short set of numbers/letters or both that
must be entered into the token in order to generate a response. Given any
challenge, only one token could issue the expected response. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Token
Code</b> is the value or number generated by most token types to be
used during the authentication. The token code is generated using a
token seed, a unique attribute or number specific to the token, and, an
algorithm. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>One
Time Password</b> <b>(OTP)</b> is a type of token code that
gets generated by a token. There is nothing particularly special
about an OTP over a Token Code other than once received and used by the
authenticating system, it cannot be re-used. OTP’s are more
secure just than a regular token code, however it can cause issues if the
user needs to perform multiple authentications within a short period of
time.<o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Authenticating systems maintain an association of tokens
with each individual user. The authenticating system, knowing the unique seed
installed on the token, ensures the token code generated could have only come
from that particular token.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Smartcard</b> is another form of token. Similar to a
bank card or ATM card, a smartcard contains a special computer chip which
stores additional information to that store on the magnetic strip. Smartcards
are used pervasively in Europe as credit cards and they are making their way
into the U.S. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Bio-Metrics</b> are devices such as fingerprint
readers, retinal scanners, facial recognition solutions, voice recognition, and
so on. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Radio-frequency identification (RFID)</b> is another
token-type technology which allows the detection of a token. This works when in
close proximity to the device which you are authenticating against. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Out of band authentication</b> is when
authentication is being performed via a different channel to the one which you
are accessing. A common example of out of band authentication is a
telephone or text-based verification system that sends a one-time access code
to gain access to an application. Your phone essentially becomes the token in
order to validate your identity. The point is that the authentication process
could start on a computer network and require a code delivered over a mobile
network to complete the process. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Cloud services are
fighting for market share and are developing the next generation of cloud
management systems. Arguably the four biggest players in the market currently
are OpenStack, CloudStack, Eucalyptus and OpenNebula.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>CloudStack : </b>Running on hypervisors like KVN,
vSphere, XenServer, and now Hyper-V, CloudStack is an <b>open-source cloud management platform designed for creating,
controlling, and deploying various cloud services</b>. With its growing
API-supported stack, CloudStack already fully supports the Amazon AWS API
model.<o:p></o:p></div>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="square">
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>What’s
good</i>: It really does keep getting better. The latest release of
CloudStack is actually pretty nice. The deployment is really smooth
consisting of only one VM running the CloudStack Management Server and
another to act as the actual cloud infrastructure. In reality, you could
deploy the whole thing on one physical host.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>The
challenges</i>: The first stable release of CloudStack is less than 2
years old, and some still question the rate of CloudStack adoption. Even with
some big advancements, some complain that the architecture and
installation process – although simplified – still requires quite a bit of
knowledge and time to deploy.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>What’s
new:</i>4.1 (with <a href="http://cloudstack.apache.org/downloads.html">4.4.2</a> just
released) sees improved security, hypervisor agnosticism, and advanced
network-layer management. Also big updates revolve around:<o:p></o:p></li>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="square">
<li class="MsoNormal">Improved
Storage Management<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Virtual

for VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Improved
Support for Hyper-V Zones, VPC and Storage Migration<o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>Who’s
using it</i>: <a href="http://www.datapipe.com/news_press/press_releases_2012/datapipe_introduces_first_global_apache_cloudstack_cloud_service/">DataPipe</a> currently
deploys its global cloud infrastructure on CloudStack. According to
DataPipe, their reasons for moving to the platform include:<o:p></o:p></li>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="square">
<li class="MsoNormal">Paused
VMs maintain machine state without compute charges<o:p></o:p></li>

<li class="MsoNormal">Additional
cost savings as a result of high performance VM’s that require fewer
computing resources<o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Outside of Datapipe – CloudStack’s largest current user –
there have been other smaller but important adopters as well. This includes
Shopzilla, SunGard Availability Services, CloudOps, Citrix, WebMD Health, and
several others.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The general consensus is that CloudStack, although strongly
gaining popularity, is that it is still in the shadows of OpenStack. <br />
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br />
<!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>OpenStack: </b>Managed by the OpenStack foundation,
the actual platform consists of multiple interrelated stack-based projects.
These all then tie into one management interface to provide a cloud computing
management platform.<o:p></o:p></div>
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="square">
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>What’s
good</i>: It’s definitely a more mature product. Furthermore, there are
more than 150 companies (AMD, Brocade, Dell, HP, IBM, VMware, and Yahoo)
who are all contributing to development. It’s seen as the leader in cloud
platform management and momentum around growth continues.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>The
challenges</i>: Even with so much adoption and development around the
platform, OpenStack is still challenging to deploy and, in many cases,
needs to be managed from various CLI consoles. The fragmented architecture
consists of a number of different modular components including– Compute,
Open Storage, Block Storage, Networking, Dashboard, Identity Service,
Image server, Telemetry, Multiple Tenant Cloud Messaging, Elastic Map
Reduce, and others. The good news is that there are a lot of configuration
and installation scripts out there to use as a template.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>What’s
new</i>: Yes, there are still some technical and deployment challenges.
Has this stopped adoption momentum? Not at all. The latest <a href="https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes/Juno">release of Juno</a> touts
342 new features. The <a href="http://www.openstack.org/software/juno/">Juno</a> release adds
enterprise features such as storage policies, a new data processing
service that provisions Hadoop and Spark, and lays the foundation for
OpenStack to be the platform for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), a
major transformation driving improved agility and efficiency in telco and
service provider data centers.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><i>Who’s
using it:</i> Oh yeah, this list is impressive and yes, it’s growing.
Jointly launched by NASA and Rackspace Hosting, OpenStack had some serious
backers from the onset. Now, OpenStack is utilized by such organizations
as AT&T, CERN, Yahoo!, HP Public Cloud, Red Hat OpenShift and several
others.<o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let’s face facts: OpenStack is a more mature and more widely
adopted platform. But that doesn’t mean it’s not facing the heat of other
players in the market. There is a lot of money being pumped into platforms like
CloudStack and even Eucalyptus. Right now, OpenStack is enjoying a mature
product set with some very high profile users.<o:p></o:p></div>

Intel Virtualization Technology (VT). Formerly known as Vanderpool, this technology enables a CPU to act as if it were several CPUs working in parallel, in order to enable several operating systems to run at the same time in the same machine. In this tutorial we will explain everything you need to know about this new technology.<br />
<br />
<br />
You may confuse virtualization with multitasking or even with Hyper-Threading. On multitasking, there is a single operating system and several programs running in parallel. On virtualization, you can have several operating systems running in parallel, each one with several programs running. Each operating system runs on a “virtual CPU” or “virtual machine”. And Hyper-Threading simulates two CPUs where there is just one physical CPU for balancing performance using SMP (Symmetric Multi Processing), and these two CPUs cannot be used separately.<br />
<br />
Of course if a CPU has both Hyper-Threading and Virtualization Technology each virtual CPU will appear to the operating system as if two CPUs are available on the system for symmetric multiprocessing.<br />
<br />
If you pay close attention, Virtualization Technology uses the same idea of Virtual 8086 (V86) mode, which is available since 386’s. With V86 mode you can create several virtual 8086 machines to run DOS-based programs in parallel. With VT you can create several “complete” virtual machines to run full operating systems in parallel.<br />
<br />
CPUs with Virtualization Technology have some new instructions to control virtualization. With them, controlling software (called VMM, Virtual Machine Monitor) can be simpler, thus improving performance compared to software-only solutions.<br />
<br />
How It Works<br />
<br />
Processors with Virtualization Technology have an extra instruction set called Virtual Machine Extensions or VMX. VMX brings 10 new virtualization-specific instructions to the CPU: VMPTRLD, VMPTRST, VMCLEAR, VMREAD, VMWRITE, VMCALL, VMLAUCH, VMRESUME, VMXOFF and VMXON.<br />
<br />
There are two modes to run under virtualization: root operation and non-root operation. Usually only the virtualization controlling software, called Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), runs under root operation, while operating systems running on top of the virtual machines run under non-root operation. Software running on top of virtual machines is also called “guest software”.<br />
<br />
To enter virtualization mode, the software should execute the VMXON instruction and then call the VMM software. Then VMM software can enter each virtual machine using the VMLAUNCH instruction, and exit it by using the VMRESUME. If VMM wants to shutdown and exit virtualization mode, it executes the VMXOFF instruction.<br />
